Sharon Carruthers

Teaching dance has been my dream since I put on my first pair of tap and ballet shoes at the age of four. I danced my entire childhood and began assisting during my high school years. After graduating from St. Gabriel in 1979 and Mercy Academy in 1983, I began studying Psychology at Bellarmine University. I graduated from the University of Louisville with a BA in Psychology and then again in 1988 with a BA in Communications. I continued to teach dance part-time as I explored other professions, including managing a restaurant and working at WAVE Television. But my dance dream never died. I opened That’s Dancing in February of 1991 with only a handful of students. I moved to this current location in June of 1999 after ‘outgrowing’ the first studio. I have the best ‘dance husband’ and ‘dance dad’ in Barry who helps out in every way he can. Our three daughters, Kaci, Kaylee, and Kenzie, love dance as well (thank goodness!). I have the best job in town! I love to dance and I love to teach. I take great pride in all of my students and my teachers. Many of my teachers have been with me since they were toddlers themselves! Owning That’s Dancing carries with it an unbelievable amount of work, but because of such wonderful teachers and staff, helpful parents, and eager students, my job is very rewarding. I hope that That’s Dancing will forever be a ‘happy dance’ in your child’s life.

  • Ms. Robin

I am very proud to be the ballet director here at That’s Dancing. I have been teaching here since 1995. I have danced professionally and taught throughout the U.S., and have chosen this studio to pursue my teaching career. I enjoy working with Sharon and the other instructors here. I especially love the students! I have watched the dancer’s appreciation of ballet grow over the years and I am very proud of the technical and artistic accomplishments. I am originally from Hollywood, FL., where I began my ballet training. I joined the Louisville Ballet in 1986 where I danced professionally for 15 years. I’m married to Steve Heckman and have three beautiful children, Savannah, Stevie, and Jake. I look forward to another rewarding year at That’s Dancing.

  • Ms. Lauren

I’ve been teaching at That’s Dancing since 2006. I have had the privilege of teaching tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, and lyrical to the best students of all ages! That’s Dancing has been a part of my life since I began taking classes here in the summer of 1996. Each year has brought new excitement and fun with each new group of students. Teaching dance is my favorite thing to do! I married my husband, Michael, on July 22, 2017. Together we enjoy cooking, watching UK sports, and spending time on the Ohio river! When I’m not teaching dance, I work as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach at Milestone Wellness Center.

  • Ms. Katie

I have been dancing with That’s Dancing since 1995. I graduated from Assumption High School in 2010 and from Western Kentucky University in 2014. I trained in tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, and hip hop at That’s Dancing and have to say jazz is my favorite. My last ballet production was Toy Story and I had the privilege of being Ham and it was a moment I will never forget. I am married to Aaron and I am a part time Project Coordinator at Fit Body Boot Camp Louisville. I have 2 boys, Carson and Brayden. Being able to teach at That’s Dancing is such an honor and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. That’s Dancing is my home away from home!

  • Ms. Colleen

I’ve been at That’s Dancing as a student since 1999, and then started teaching in 2008. Through the years, I have trained in tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, musical theater, hip-hop, and pom, tap being what I always enjoyed most. I participated in the Rockette Summer Intensive and the Chicago Human Rhythm Festival, which helped me to gain more experience in performing and choreographing various styles of tap. I was a member of the Bellarmine University Dance Team for 4 years where I served as a team captain my junior and senior year. I then graduated from Bellarmine University in 2017 with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and am currently working as a physical therapist. Though I loved performing and competing at That’s Dancing and Bellarmine, teaching has always been a passion of mine. My students never cease to inspire me, and I hope to always push them to be their absolute best. I love working with young dancers and watching them gain confidence, recognize their strengths, and discover their own passion for dance. The students and families at That’s Dancing create an environment that is unparalleled, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it!

  • Ms. Kaci

I began my dance journey in 2000 at the age of 3 at That’s Dancing Dance Studio. And after 23 years, I'm still here! I attended the University of Louisville for 2 years with a focus on Technical Theater and was the Master Carpenter in their shop. I worked as a carpenter with Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. After 2 years, I missed dance and needed to find somewhere to help me grow in that aspect. I graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2020 with a double major in Dance and Psychology. I was a member of the WKU Dance Team and the WKU Dance Program, and I learned many valuable lessons while growing my dance education on and off the stage/field. Dance has been such an amazing part of my life and I have always loved being able to share that passion with others.

My teaching journey began in 2012 at TDDS. From my very first class I knew it was something I was meant to do. Seeing young dancers find confidence, passion, and love for dance is so rewarding and special. I believe dance teaches kids so much about themselves, it gives them the tools for teamwork, dedication, persistence, and gives them a supportive growing environment while learning these things. I am so lucky to be able to call this my job and be able to be a part of these dancers' lives! TDDS is such a beautiful and rewarding community to be a part of and I can’t wait to be able to help other young dancers around Louisville find their passion through dance!

  • Ms. Hannah

I began dancing at That's Dancing in 2000 when I was 3 and began teaching in 2013. Throughout my years at That's Dancing I've learned many styles of dance including tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip hop, and musical theatre. I love sharing a passion for dance with my students and seeing them grow in their abilities and confidence. In 2020 I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Louisville. I work as a Graphic Designer for Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. That's Dancing is such an encouraging, welcoming, and loving environment and there is no place like it! That's Dancing truly is a family and a home away from home!

  • Ms. Holly

I’ve been dancing here at That’s Dancing since 2002, when I was 6 years old. I started competing on our competition teams right after that. I started teaching dance in 2012, after being an assistant teacher for many years. During my time dancing here at That’s Dancing, I was a main character in several of our ballet productions. Some of my most memorable roles were Al (Toy Story 2, 2010), the Sultan (Aladdin, 2013), and the Stepmother (Cinderella, 2014). I am very passionate about dance and teaching others how to dance. Even after I graduated from Assumption High School in 2014, I continued competing for the studio for a year. I also joined the Bellarmine University Dance Team. My passion for dance still lives on, and I hope to share that with my students.

  • Ms. Kaylee

That’s Dancing has been a part of my life for as long as I remember, and I am fortunate enough to still be involved with TDDS as a teacher. I fell in love with dance when I started taking classes at 2 years old, and fell even more in love when I performed my first tap solo at the age of 5 (thank you Mom). I took tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, hip hop, lyrical, and modern classes for 16 years. I am currently a student in the Occupational Therapy Doctoral program at the University in Indianapolis and will graduate in May 2025. While I miss seeing my TDDS family daily, I am so extremely blessed to still be able to choreograph competitive dances, both groups and solos, while I am away! Teaching dance is so special and so incredibly rewarding, especially at That’s Dancing. There is truly no other studio like TDDS!! :)

  • Ms. Caroline

I began dancing at That’s Dancing in 2006, and I started teaching and choreographing in 2017.  After graduating from Assumption High School in 2019, I knew dance and teaching needed to be part of my life forever. This pushed me to major in Arts Administration with a minor in dance at the University of Kentucky. I graduated in 2023 and now work for Varsity Spirit as an event coordinator planning dance and cheer competitions. Each year I am extremely proud of every dancer I have the privilege to teach, and I’m always amazed with their work ethic and talent. I’m not sure where I’d be without such an encouraging and supportive place that helped me find what I love to do. That’s Dancing always has been and always will be home!

  • Ms. Heather

I have been dancing with That’s Dancing since 2006. I graduated from Manual High School. I am currently enrolled at University of Louisville in their Early Education program. I love being able to help our students grow as dancers! I set high expectations for them and strive to help them towards being the best dancer they can be. My favorite thing about Tat’s Dancing: I love the family that we have here and getting to know everyone throughout the years.

  • Ms. Kierstin

I have been dancing with That’s Dancing since 2007. I graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 2023. I have been assisting with classes at That’s Dancing since 2014 and started teaching on my own in 2019. I’m currently enrolled at the University of Louisville in their Early Education program. Having performed in many genres of dance myself, it gives me the knowledge to assist the growth of students in many different ways. I love having the opportunity to teach children from preschool and up, allowing me to help them grow in their dance ability. My favorite thing about That’s Dancing is the family atmosphere and having the opportunity to meet and get to know the dancers and families that attend.

  • Ms. Maggie

I’ve been dancing at That’s Dancing since 2007. I started assisting teachers in 2018 and started teaching on my own in 2021. I graduated Assumption High School in 2022. I am currently attending the University of Louisville majoring in Sports Administration with a minor in Communications. I am also a current member of the University of Louisville Ladybirds dance team giving me the opportunity to help teach clinics to younger girls . I have been trained in multiple styles including jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre, and modern. I have grown up looking up to my dance teachers wanting to be just like them and be there to teach young dancers just like them. I have had multiple opportunities to be a leader in the dance world and I just want to share the love and passion I have for dance to the students I teach! My favorite thing about That’s Dancing is walking in and feeling the atmosphere of the studio. There is no other place that I feel like I belong, TDDS is where I was for more than half of my life. I grew up with not only my best friends to this day, but my sisters and second home and family. Even as an alum the favorite part of my day and even week is stepping into the studio whether it is to dance, teach, or just simply stop in and say hi!

  • Ms. Ella

I have been a student at That's Dancing since 2008 and this is where my love for dance began. I graduated from Louisville Male High School in 2024 and I'm currently a student at the University of Louisville majoring in Biology. I have been more than fortunate to be a part of the Louisville Ladybirds which gives me the opportunity to continue my love for dance. My dance experience includes jazz, tap, ballet, hiphop, lyrical, musical theater, and pom. That's Dancing has been my home away from home for as long as I can remember and I am so happy to have found such a welcoming family.

  • Ms. Karagan

I started dancing at That’s Dancing in 2008 and teaching a few years later in 2013! I absolutely loved my time training in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, and hip hop alongside some of my best friends! I graduated high school in 2016 and moved to Richmond KY to attend EKU where I got my Bachelor’s degree in communication disorders. During my time there I had the privilege of training with the dance theater and being captain of the dance team! This time brought more training in jazz, pom, modern dance, and hip hop! I then moved back to Louisville after graduation in 2020 and graduated from UofL in 2022 with my Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology! I am now using this degree as a feeding therapist with my focus in the NICU! I fell in love while at EKU and got to marry Jacob in 2022 and we now are parents to our precious boy! Life is so fun these days and I am so thankful to still be able to call That’s Dancing a second home! This place is something special and I am so thankful to be apart of a family that lifts up and encourages our dancers both in and out of the studio as they grow up! I love all my dancers and am so thankful for the continued opportunity to teach and learn from them every week! There truly is no other place like That’s Dancing!!

  • Ms. Anna

I’ve been dancing at That’s Dancing since 2011. I started teaching in 2021. I graduated from Mercy Academy in 2022. I am currently enrolled at the University of Louisville (Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology). I'm a big believer in the power of progress. It's my responsibility to encourage constant growth in each of my students, and I expect all of my students to continue learning and improving even when they doubt themselves. I'm committed to offering constructive criticism and uplifting my students, so that they can become the best dancers, students, and people they can be. I value all of my students as individuals. I want them all to know that I care about them, not just as a dancer, but as a person who is growing up and experiencing the world. My favorite thing about That’s Dancing is I love the sense of community.

  • Ms. Gwyneth

I have been dancing with That’s Dancing Since 2012. I am currently a Junior at Mercy Academy. I started teaching in 2022. I am currently still a dancer at That’s Dancing and I love incorporating my love for styles like lyrical into my classes. I am always ready to teach and learn from my girls. My favorite thing about That’s Dancing is the smiles that dancing brings to everyone’s face as they get lost in the music amongst peers, teachers, and friends.

Office Personnel

Ms. Traci

Both of my daughters danced at That’s Dancing for many years. My oldest daughter began dancing in 2005 and my youngest daughter began in 2006. The need arose in the 2016-2017 dance year for someone to work in the office, a few hours a week, and I gladly accepted the offer. I have gradually added more hours and am glad that I have the opportunity to be in the office to get to know more of the parents. In the summer of 2016, an adult tap class was formed. I started taking the class for the exercise. I am so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried the class because I have enjoyed the class exponentially and have a new found awe of what it takes for the students to excel in each of their dances. That’s Dancing is a wonderful place to have been a part of for many years. I look forward to more years to come. It truly is my home away from home. All the parents, staff, and students are wonderful. I know it sounds cliché, but That’s Dancing really does feel like one large, happy family.
